FRIENDS BRAVE THE SHAVE AT MANSFIELD SALON
KH Hair shaves the heads of three friends for MacMillan Cancer campaign
A trio of friends have had their heads shaved at KH Hair in Mansfield in support of MacMillan Cancer’s Brave the Shave campaign.
Joe Phelan (18), Akeame Aldread (18) and William Smith (19) visited the Market Street salon on Thursday 17 January where staff whipped out their razors and gave them a complimentary head shave – all in a good cause.
The Mansfield trio, who have been friends since school, chose William’s Birthday as the day to do the brave deed. The brainchild for the challenge, he explains: “I brought the idea to life because my Great Grandma spent her last days in the care of Macmillan and I wanted to help make a difference for many others. It’s not every day I go for such an extreme haircut, but it felt good to do something that was both surprisingly enjoyable and helped make a stand against cancer.”
Akeame says he wanted to brave the shave because his family has lost so much to cancer. “I lost my Grandad and Great Grandma to the disease and, although I can’t bring them back, I felt that doing our bit to help make sure no one else has to go through this someday, will really make a difference.”
Joe added: “William asked me and Akeame if we would do it too. We agreed as it is such a great cause. Both of my friends have lost relatives to cancer so I was happy to support them by shaving my head too. We were all nervous going into it but once we got into the chairs and the shaving started, I think we all lost those nerves and instead felt a real sense of pride to have gone through with it.”
The Brave the Shave campaign was launched in 2015 and, since then, has raised over £16.8 million for the cancer charity. KH Hair Mansfield salon director, Jane Fletcher,
“We all think the three lads are very brave for having their heads shaved and it’s great they had each others’ support on the day. Brave the Shave is a fantastic campaign and we wish them the very best of luck with their fundraising.”
